FSU Volleyball Splits on Second Day of Bridgewater Tournament

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Frostburg State volleyball team set a school record for starting the season 13-0 after winning its morning match against Bridgewater, but then fell from the ranks of the unbeaten as it lost its afternoon contest to Washington & Lee at the Bridgewater Tournament, Saturday.

With a 3-1 win over host Bridgewater, the Bobcats (13-1) set a school record by opening the season 13-0. The previous mark was a 12-0 start by the 1999 squad that also holds the school record for wins in a season (36).

FSU grabbed a quick 2-0 lead on the Eagles, 25-15 and 25-12. BC bounced back for a slim 25-23 game three win but Frostburg closed out the match with a 25-6 game-four thumping.

Junior Sabrina Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and senior Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) combined for 27 kills in the win. Sabrina Winterling finished with 14 kills and six blocks while Stephens had 13 kills, 14 digs and two blocks. Junior Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) handed out 39 assists and had six digs.

Senior Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) and junior Amber Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) each turned in excellent all-around efforts. Thomas finished with 11 kills, 15 digs, four blocks and six aces while Amber Winterling had seven kills, eight digs, four blocks and three aces. Senior libero Brittany McVearry (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) had 14 digs.

In the second match, FSU took a 2-0 lead, but W&L rebounded with three-straight wins to claim the match 3-2. The Bobcats captured games one and two with scores of 25-21 and 25-22, but the Generals proved too much and posted 25-20, 25-18 and 15-7 scores.

Stephens led the Bobcats with 13 kills and 13 digs while Sabrina Winterling had nine kills and two blocks. Thomas had eight kills, 14 digs, two blocks and an ace while Amber Winterling recorded six kills, 11 digs, two blocks and three aces.

Carrington finished 33 assists, four kills and three aces.

Sabrina Winterling and Carrington were named to the all-tournament team for their stellar performances. It's the first all-tournament award for each of them of their FSU careers

Frostburg travels to Geneva this Wednesday for a match at 7:00 pm.
