NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - In a thrilling come-from-behind victory, the Frostburg State women's soccer team scored three second half goals to steal a 4-3 win from Christopher Newport, Sunday afternoon.
Box Score
Frostburg State (4-1) trailed 3-1 just under 15 minutes into second half action but never gave up and rallied with three goals over the final 30 minutes for the win. Four different players scored for the Bobcats who outshot CNU (1-3) 24-19, including a 15-9 edge in the second half.
FSU surrendered the game's first goal just 39 seconds in as Emma O'Reilly took a long pass from the center and beat the keeper for a 1-0 lead.
The game remained 1-0 for the next 34 minutes until the Frostburg tandem of senior
Heather Fleishell (Middletown, Md./Middletown) and sophomore
Liz Seligman (Rockville, Md./St. Johns College) evened things at one goal apiece. Fleishell headed in a corner kick from Seligman for the second time this season at 34:39 and the score would the same at the half.
O'Reilly again put the Captains ahead as she chipped a shot off the crossbar and into the net just over six minutes into the second half for a 2-1 lead. Sam Ciaravino tallied an unassisted goal seven minutes later as CNU appeared to take control of the contest.
However, the Bobcats rallied with three unanswered in the final 30:50 to steal the victory. Senior
Lauren Russell (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) started the comeback with her first goal of the season at 59:10 after dribbling past a defender and beating the goalkeeper one-on-one.
Sophomore
Dorie Gedridge (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) evened the score at 3-3 with her first collegiate goal in the 74th minute as she took a long pass over the defense from senior
Taylor Jenkins (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) and beat the keeper.
FSU kept its foot on the gas and five shots later found the net for the game-winner. Sophomore
Amanda Wharton (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) scored for the fifth time in the last three games in the 85th minute to complete the comeback. Seligman found Wharton in the middle of the field and she did the rest on her own to give FSU the stunning comeback victory.
Wharton, who leads FSU with six goals in five games this season, registered a season and game-high nine shots and picked up her team-leading third game-winning goal this fall.
Junior goalkeeper
Michelle Buckmaster (St. Leonard, Md./Calvert) allowed three goals and stopped five shots in the win.
The Bobcats return home to host St. Vincent on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
