Volleyball Picks Up Two More Wins; Takes FSU Tournament Crown

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State volleyball team captured its second-consecutive tournament title after downing Geneva 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in the FSU Tournament Championship game. The Bobcats finished the weekend a perfect 4-0 and push their overall record to 10-0 on the season. Last weekend, the Bobcats finished in a tie for first place with Eastern at the Haverford Tournament.

The 10-0 start is the second-best in the program's history as the 1999 squad opened the season 12-0.

The Bobcats slipped past Geneva in the title match 25-23, 25-19 and 25-22. FSU Tournament Most Valuable Player Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) turned in an all-around solid effort with 10 digs, six kills, two blocks, one assist and one servcie ace. Senior Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett), an all-tournament team selection for the second-straight week, finished with 15 kills, 11 digs and two aces.

With game one knotted at 22-22, the Bobcats scored back-to-back points for a 24-22 lead. Geneva closed the gap to one before FSU picked up the final point for the win. Frostburg jumped out to a 13-7 lead in the second game and never allowed GC to close within five points before going on for a six-point win. In the third and decisive game, FSU rallied from an 19-14 hole with five-straight points to tie the game. After falling behind by two, 21-19, the Bobcats scored six of the contest's final seven points for the sweep.

Junior Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) distributed 34 assists and 11 digs while classmate Amber Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) had 16 digs, seven kills and one block.

Frostburg State advanced to the championship after sweeping past North Carolina Wesleyan in the first match of the day 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-16). Carrington again handed out over 30 assists for the second-straight match after finishing with 31. Amber Winterling notched five aces.

The Bobcats host McDaniel on Wednesday Sept. 15 at 7:00 pm and travel to Bridgewater for a tri-match next weekend.
