Baseball Wins Two, Penn State Behrend Downs Mt. Aloysius

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team advanced to the championship game of the 2010 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament Championships, Saturday afternoon with a 14-11 win over #3 Penn State Altoona and a 7-6 win over #5 Mount Aloysius while #2 Penn State Behrend defeated #5 Mt. Aloysius 13-2 to move on to the championship game as well.

FSU kicked the second day of the tournament off by finishing the game against #3 Penn State Altoona that started last night but was delayed because of thunderstorms. The Bobcats held a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth when play resumed this morning. The Lions tied the game at four in the top of the fifth on a RBI single from Jim Byers though the Bobcats came right back and took the lead 5-4 on a RBI single from senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown (Shepherd)) to score junior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll (Hagerstown)).

PSA scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead back, 6-5, on a two-run homerun from Jimmy Baum in the top of the sixth. Frostburg State would not allow the Lions to hold the lead for long scoring seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Adam Summerfelt (Gambrills, Md./Arch Bishop Spalding) led off the inning reaching on a fielding error by the PSA third baseman. Junior Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) reached on an infield single to put runners on first and second. Junior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby (Hagerstown)) followed with a RBI single to left to bring home Summerfelt. Greene then hit a three-run shot to right center to clear the bases, his 13th of the season. Ridenour doubled to right center and crossed the plate on senior Joe Garrity's (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) two-run homerun to left field. Sophomore Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) walked and was moved to third on a single from junior Rich Schuler (Wilmington, Del./Caravel Academy (Cecil)). Summerfelt brought home the last run of the inning with a sac fly to right center to score Anuszewski.

The Lions got one run back in the top of the eighth but Frostburg State answered with two more in the bottom of the inning. Greene singled to to right center to score Kroboth. After a successful double steal attempt with Garrity, Greene was able to came around to score on a throwing error by the Lions' catcher.

The Bobcats led 14-7 going into the top of the ninth inning when PSA attempted a come-back and put four runs on the board on a grand slam from Ryan Pollicino. FSU hung on the lead and won 14-11.

Greene went 5-for-5 in the game with two homeruns and five RBIs and five runs scored.

Senior Greg Beachy (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) picked up his eighth win of the season for the Bobcats going 2.2 innings, giving up four runs, all earned, on five hits and two walks while striking out three. Junior Spenser Madsen (Easton, Md./St. Michaels) got the save for the Bobcats pitching the final two outs of the ninth inning with one strike out.

In the fourth game of the tournament, Penn State Behrend took on Mt. Aloysius for a spot in the championship game of the tournament. PSB struck first scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on back-to-back homeruns from Ryan Liddle and Josh Fyffe. MTA answered with a run in the top of the second on a homerun to left from Aaron Kovach but could not get a rally going. Penn State Behrend took the game 13-2 after scoring six runs in bottom of the sixth to secure the win. Ryan Geibel went 2-for-4 on the day with four RBIs for the Lions while Kovach went 3-for-4 on the day with one RBI and a homerun.

In the fifth game of the tournament, Frostburg State took on Mt. Aloysius for a spot against Penn State Behrend in the championship game. FSU struck first with three runs in the bottom of the second on a balk to score Anuszewski and a RBI single from Schuler to score junior Corey Carr (McHenry, Md./Northern Garrett (Garrett)) and Heatwole. The Bobcats added two more runs in the fifth on a wild pitch to bring home Summerfelt and a RBI single from Anuszewski to score Greene. FSU put its last two runs of the game on the board in the bottom of the seventh with a RBI double from Garrity to score Greene and a RBI single from Heatwole to score Garrity.

The Mounties attempted a comeback in the top of the eighth with six runs on six hits but could not overtake the Bobcats. Junior Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park (Anne Arnudel CC)) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to notch the win for FSU.

Ridenour picked up the win for Frostburg State pitching 7.2 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits with two walks while striking out 10. Quayle picked up his second save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.

The 2010 AMCC Championship Tournament will conclude with the championship game between #1 Frostburg State and #2 Penn State Behrend at 10:00 am Sunday, May 16.
