Baseball Drops First Game of AMCC Tournament, Penn State Behrend Defeats Penn State Altoona

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team dropped its first game of the Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship tournament to Mt. Aloysius, 6-5 Friday afternoon, while Penn State Behrend pulled out a win over Penn State Altoona, 5-4.

In the first game of the day, #2 Penn State Behrend took on #3 Penn State Altoona. PSB came out on top after battling through the first three innings. Penn State Altoona scored in the top of the first and again in the top of the second, Behrend came back and answered with a run in each of the bottom of the second and third. Altoona took the lead with a run in the top of the sixth and added to it in the top of the seventh before PSB answered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Penn State Behrend held on to the 5-4 win. Penn State Altoona's Cord Heine went 2-for-5 with one RBI and a double while Penn State Behrend's Dustin Dubensky went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a homerun and a double.

#1 Frostburg State took on #5 Mt. Aloysius in the second game of the day which started as a pitchers dual as neither team scored until the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior Rich Schuler (Wilmington, Del./Caravel Academy (Cecil)) led off the inning by reaching on an error by the MTA short stop and came around to score on classmate Daniel Heatwole's (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby (Hagerstown)) fielder's choice.

The Mounties took the lead in the game in the top of the seventh. Third baseman Aaron Kovach came on to score on balk to tie the game at one a piece. MTA took the lead on a RBI single from Brett Daly to score Eli Traup, 2-1. The Bobcats tied the game at two in the bottom of the same inning on a RBI single from junior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll (Hagerstown)) to score Heatwole.

MTA and FSU exchanged runs in the eighth inning. The Mounties scored on two costly errors by the Bobcats, but FSU was able to answer in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Adam Summerfelt (Gambrills, Md./Arch Bishop Spalding) bunted his way on to load the bases for senior Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) who walked to bring home Schuler.

Mt. Aloysius broke open the game in the top of the ninth with three runs on three hits and an error to take the lead 6-3. The Bobcats answered with two runs in the bottom of the ninth but were not able to overcome the Mounties. Greene walked to lead off the inning and was moved to second with a single from senior Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown (Shepherd)). Sophomore Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) doubled down the right field line to bring home Greene followed with an sac fly from Schuler to bring home Ridenour. Despite the two-run comeback, the Bobcats were not able to overtake the Mounties and dropped their first game of the tournament, 6-5.

Anuszewski went 2-for-4 on the afternoon with a double and a RBI while MTA's Bryan Nolan went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, a double and a stolen base.

Sophomore Zach O'Dell (White Plains, Md./Henry E. Lackey) suffered the loss for FSU pitching 2.0 innings giving up four runs, two earned, on three hits, while striking out two. Sean Steffy got the win for the Mounties, pitching 1.2 innings giving up two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out one.

With the loss, Frostburg State took on Penn State Altoona in the third game of the day, but was cut short due to a thunderstorm. The game will resume at 10:00 am tomorrow, May 15. Frostburg State currently leads Penn State Altoona 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning. In the bottom of the first inning, Greene hit a solo shot to left center and now sits alone at the top of the single-season homerun record with 12.

Penn State Behrend will take on Mt. Aloysius following the conclusion of the FSU/PSA game.
