FSU Men & Women Both Take Fifth at Mason-Dixon Invitational

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Frostburg State men's and women's track & field teams each took home fifth place at the Mason-Dixon Invitational at Gettysburg College, Saturday. The Bobcats posted 18 top-5 finishes, won six individual events and won a relay race.

Host Gettysburg won the women's title with 131 points while the Bobcats were fifth with 87. Dickinson won the men's side with 171 points while FSU was fifth with 73.5.

Junior Emily Furr (Damascus, Md./Poolesville) earned two first-place finishes on the afternoon, winning both the women's high jump (1.60 meters) and women's triple jump (11.07 meters). Both qualified her for the ECAC Championships and she now has a combined five victories in those events in three outdoor meets this spring.

Senior Christina Aumand (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Huntingtown) and junior Jessica O'Neil (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) combined to finish one/two in the 10,000-meter run. Aumand captured the win in 41:45.51 while O'Neil was runner-up in 42:11.25.

Senior Gwen Massey (Thorofare, N.J./West Deptford) captured the final victory for the women when she won the 1,500-meter run (4:54.09).

Sophomore Amy Brennan (Fort Washington, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) finished the invitational with a pair of top-5 finishes to her credit. She was second in the 200-meter dash (27.66) and fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:02.37).

Senior Kayla Peters (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) took home two top-5 finishes in the field events after finishing fourth in the shot put (9.12 meters) and fifth in the discus throw (24.29 meters). Junior Danielle Wivell-Wagner (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) captured third in the discus throw (28.51 meters).

The FSU men's team had three first-place finishes in the 4x400-meter relay team, the 200-meter dash and the 10,000-meter run. Sophomores Sean Wright (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen), Markese Hayden (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) and Charles Jacobs (Baltimore, Md./Aberdeen) along with sophomore Mitchell Hill (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) teamed for a win in the 4x400 in 3:26.03.

Individually, sophomore Gavin Caupp (Frostburg, Md./Mountain Ridge) won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 33:40.77.

Sophomore David Thomas captured victory in the 200-meter dash (22.44) and was the lone Eastern College Athletic Conference qualifier on the men's side after finishing runner-up in the 100-meter dash in an even 11.00.

Wright finished third in the 400-meter dash (51.68), Hill was third in the long jump (5.69 meters) and senior Steven Flanagan (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) was second in the 400-meter hurdles in 58.10 .

Flanagan and Scruggs combined with senior Garrett Daley (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) and junior Anthony Tossounian (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) to finish fifth in the 4x100-meter relay in 44.68.

The FSU track & field teams are at the Paul Kaiser Invitational next Saturday on the campus of Shippensburg University.
