SALISBURY, Md. – Frostburg State pounded out 18 hits, jumped out to an early lead and never looked back on its way to an 11-4 win over Albright in its season opening softball game, Saturday morning at the Salisbury Tournament. In the win over Albright, the Bobcats (1-1) wasted little time plating three runs in the first inning and four more in the fourth for a 7-1 lead. FSU tacked on two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh. Meanwhile, Albright (0-4) scored one in the second and sixth innings and two in the seventh.

Sophomore starter Megan Magee (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Holy Spirit) turned in a stellar effort in the season opening win. She fanned eight batters while allowing four runs on 11 hits.

Junior Megan Henne (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) paced the Bobcats at the plate. She finished 4-for-5 with five RBIs, including two in the first inning and two in the seventh.

With the bases loaded in the first, Henne singled home junior Brooke Tapman (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) and sophomore Lauren Scrivener (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) for the game’s first two runs. Following an RBI single in the fourth, she drove home Tapman and junior Victoria Krichbaum (Olney, Md./Sherwood) for FSU’s final runs in the seventh.

Freshman Taylor Vandegrift (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) plated a pair in the sixth inning with a bases-loaded two-run single that extended the FSU lead to 9-1.

Vandegrift finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Krichbaum finished 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI and sophomore Jenna Delaney (Frostburg, Md./Mountain Ridge) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Unfortunately, the hot start against Albright was not enough to capture a win over nationally ranked Salisbury in the second game of the day for Frostburg.

The Sea Gulls (5-2) scored three runs in both the third and fourth and two in the fifth. SU starting pitcher Erika Brittingham held the Bobcats scoreless and allowed just three hits while Salisbury’s Lauren Brenneman finished two hits and four RBIs.

Tapman, Henne and freshman Megan Butzner (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) each recorded a hit while Henne suffered the loss on the mound. She tossed all 5.0 innings allowing eight runs (six earned) with seven strikeouts.

FSU returns to action tomorrow when it faces Rowan at 10:00 am and Salisbury again at noon.
