WASHINGTON, D.C. - In it's first true doubleheader of the season, the Frostburg State softball team dropped a pair of close games to Catholic, Tuesday. The Bobcats fell in game one, 6-4, and dropped game two, 2-1.
The Bobcats have dropped their last five games and settle on a 5-9 overall so far this spring. Meanwhile, Catholic improves to 11-5.
In game one, the Cardinals rallied from a 3-1 deficit with a five-run fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run homerun from Stacie Goddard. FSU threatened in the seventh inning after a pair of walks and an error loaded the bases. Freshman Megan Foy (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) scored on a wild pitch to narrow the score to 6-4 but CUA starter Stephanie Clemente struckout the next batter to end the game.
Freshman Megan Butzner (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) knocked in the only runs of the game for the Bobcats with a two-run double in the first inning that handed the visitors a quick 2-0 advantage. Catholic plated one run in the bottom half of the first but FSU extended the lead to 3-1 when junior Jackie Lynch (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) scored on an error in the third.
Junior Megan Henne (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) suffered the loss despite striking out six and limiting the Cards to just three earned runs.
The second game did not prodcue as much action as neither team was able to score until the sixth inning. The Bobcats got on the board in the top of the frame as Foy singled home junior Victoria Krichbaum (Olney, Md./Sherwood) for a 1-0 cushion. However, Catholic answered in its next at-bat as Tracey Scanlon scored on a passed ball to even the count at 1-1. CUA took the lead two batters later when Lynn Brown scored the final run with a sacrifice bunt.
Sophomore Megan Magee (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Holy Spirit) got the loss in the circle as she allowed two runs on three hits and punched out seven.
Foy finished 2-for-2 with an RBI while Krichbaum was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Frostburg will try and ends its losing skid when it hosts Hood for a doubleheader on Thursday at 3:00 pm.
