Men's Basketball Loses Close Battle With Medaille 81-77

Junior Brian Anderson
BUFFALO, N.Y. - Junior Brian Anderson (Perry Hall, Md./Eastern Tech) scored a game-high 23 points but it wasn't enough as the Frostburg State men's basketball team dropped a hard fought contest to Medaille, 81-77, Saturday afternoon.

Medaille (21-2, 16-2) clinched the AMCC regular season title with the victory, but it didn't come easy as the contest featured 12 lead changes and five ties. FSU (12-8, 9-7) made nine more baskets than the Mavericks and outrebounded the hosts 36-33. However, Medaille was 31-of-49 from the foul line to make up for the deficit in baskets.

The Mavs led by seven in the opening half of action but Frostburg State rebounded for a one-point edge (31-30) at 2:39. Senior Nick Sefcik (Shady Grove, Md./Damascus) hit a 3-pointer to give the Bobcats a two-point lead with 1:40 left but Medaille made five free throws over the final two minutes for a 35-34 halftime lead.

The two squads traded points over the first few minutes of the second half until an Anderson jumper put FSU up three (42-39). Medaille's Chris Moscato hit three 3-pointers to spark a 17-6 run that handed the hosts an eight-point edge (56-48) with 11:14 to play.

FSU then collected a 16-7 run spanning the next six minutes and held a one-point lead (64-63) at 5:06, but MED took the lead for good at 4:39 on a layup by Ricky Reed. The Mavs made 10 free throws down the stretch and opened a six-point lead with 1:09 to play.

Anderson finished 11-of-18 from the floor with 23 points. Juniors Busha Koffa (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) and Ellis Hartridge (Washington, D.C./Anacostia) each grabbed 11 rebounds while Koffa chipped in 18 points.

Ron Malicki and Mike Berkun led Medaille with 17 points each while Moscato finished with 16.

Frostburg State returns to action on Monday when it travels to Franciscan at 8:00 pm.
