Volleyball Squeaks Past York 3-2 and Into CAC Championship

FROSTBURG, Md. - It wasn't pretty, but the Frostburg State University volleyball team dug deep and pulled out a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over York (Pa.) in the Capital Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament semifinals, Thursday.

The Bobcats (31-3) fell behind 1-0 and later trailed 2-1, but rallied to advance to the CAC Tournament championship.

FSU dropped the first set to the Spartans (27-6) after trailing for most of the game. FSU tied the game at 9-9 but York slowly eased out to a 25-19 win. The Bobcats turned the tides and led for much of the second set. The Spartans evened the scored at 8-8 but FSU slowly inched away for a 19-14 lead before winning by the same margin, 25-20.

Neither team pulled away for much fo the third set as the game was tied seven times, including the final time at 18-18. York led 22-20 late in the contest and used a small 4-0 run for a 25-21 win and a 2-1 lead.

The Bobcats took a four-point lead (18-14) in the fourth set, but York again battled back to tie the contest four times late in the set, the final coming at 25-25, before FSU gathered the final two points for a 27-25 victory.

In the fifth, the Bobcat attack kicked into gear by hitting .310 and leading for much of the game. York called a pair of timeouts but it didn't slow down FSU as it posted an 8-2 run over the second half of the contest for a 15-6 win.

Senior Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) poured in a game-high 21 kills to go along with 21 digs. Junior Sabrina Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) hit a game-high .367 in the middle with 15 kills and five blocks. Her sister Amber Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) led all players with 22 digs and was third on the team with 11 digs.

Junior Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) handed out 49 assists and posted 15 digs while senior Brittany McVearry (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) had 13 digs.

Senior Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) finished with 19 digs, seven kills and two assists and moved into second all-time in school history in digs.

With the win, Frostburg State will host second seeded Mary Washington on Saturday at Bobcat Arena at 2:00 pm in the tournament championship.
