FROSTBURG, Md. - A pair of early goals from senior defender
Heather Fleishell (Middletown, Md./Middletown) propelled the Frostburg State women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday in the opening round of the ECAC South Regional Tournament.
Box Score
Both of Fleishell's goals came early in the first half, and both were assisted by sophomore defender
Liz Seligman (Rockville, Md./St. Johns College). Seligman has now assisted on all nine of Fleishell's goals and leads the team with 13 assists overall.
Fleishell notched her first - which also proved to be the game-winner - in the fifth minute on a shot from outside the penalty area that Lebanon Valley goalkeeper Sami Young did not appear to see very well. With Lebanon Valley (10-9-2) controlling the play in the very early-going, the goal from the senior seemed to spark the Bobcats.
Just 11 minutes later in the 16th minute, Fleishell tallied her second of the game in a more familiar format. In what ended up as Frostburg's only corner kick of the match, she headed home the entry from Seligman to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. It also gave Fleishell her first multi-goal game since scoring two Nov. 4, 2009, against Pitt-Bradford in the conference semifinals.
Frostburg State (16-4) added a third goal in the 70th minute on a pretty play from two talented forwards. Senior
Lauren Russell (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) and freshman
Adria Graham (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) played give-and-go with touch passes that finally rested with Russell. She smoked the shot past Young to make it 3-0.
The Bobcats outshot Lebanon Valley, 16-12. Junior goalkeepers
Michelle Buckmaster (St. Leonard, Md./Calvert) and
Kristin Prochniak (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) combined to make six saves and post the shutout of the Dutchmen.
Frostburg State will now host the semifinals and finals of the ECAC South Regional Tournament. The semifinals doubleheader (Saturday, Nov. 13) will feature Marywood vs. Grove City at 5:00 p.m. and Frostburg State vs. Alvernia at 7:00 p.m. The tournament finals will take place at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
