Volleyball Wins Two More; Clinches Top Seed in CAC Tournament

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Frostburg State University volleyball team clinched the top seed in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament with a a pair of wins Saturday at the St. Mary's (Md.) College quad-match. FSU shutout both St. Mary's and Messiah 3-0.

In the first match, the Bobcats (27-3, 7-0) remained a perfect 7-0 in the CAC and wrapped up first place in the conference regular season standings. The win secures a first-round bye and home court advantage for FSU in the CAC Tournament, which will start on Tuesday, Nov. 2.

Frostburg State downed St. Mary's (25-4, 5-2) in straight-sets 25-20, 25-14, 25-20.

Junior Amber Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) posted a double-double 19 digs and 10 kills while senior Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) led the team offensively with 14 kills. Stephens also added nine digs and one block and Amber Winterling chipped in three aces.

Junior Sabrina Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) finished second on the team with eight kills, one assist and one block and junior Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) handed out 35 assists with three aces, two blocks and one kill.

Senior Brittany McVearry (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) captured seven digs and two aces while classmate Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) filled up the stat sheet with 13 digs, six kills, four aces, one block and one assist.

In the second match, the Bobcats pushed their winning streak to eight matches with a 27-25, 25-20, 25-15 victory over Messiah (16-8).

Stephens again led the way offensively with 16 kills followed by Amber Winterling with 10. Both recorded nine digs in the win while Stephens collected one block, one ace and one assist.

Carrington passed out 38 assists with seven digs and two blocks while Thomas had 12 digs, seven kills, two assists, one ace and one block. McVearry turned in eight digs and one ace.

In the two sets, freshman Alexandria McLeod (Lanham, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) posted three kills and three blocks.

FSU hosts Wesley in its final home regular season match at Bobcat Arena on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
