Football Drops Second-Straight Game to Ranked Team; Loses to No. 25 Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y. - The No. 25 ranked Alfred Saxons scored five first half touchdowns and never looked back on their way to a 49-24 victory over Frostburg State in non-conference football action, Saturday.

The Alfred offense was quick and effective, scoring touchdowns on seven of 10 possessisons. Alfred (4-0) had just two drives that lasted more than three minutes and averaged a little over five plays per scoring drive. The Saxons totaled 464 yards of offense, including 202 on the ground. Tom Secky threw for 262 yards and two scores and Chris Lopez ran for 70 yards and three touchdowns to lead the attack.

Frostburg State (1-4) turned out 296 yards in total offense, behind 188 passing yards from freshman quaterback Geoff Suddath (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty). He completed 18-of-29 passes and a pair of second quarter scores that helped FSU battle back for a 35-17 deficit at the half. Senior tailback Anthony King (Germantown, Md./Northwest) ran for 87 yards on 25 carries and a fourth quarter touchdown.

Secky fired his first touchdown of the afternoon to cap the game's opening drive and Alfred's longest of the afternoon. The drive, five plays and 72 yards, lasted just 2:05 and Secky found Adam Schutz for a 49-yard scoring strike and a quick 7-0 lead.

The Bobcats bounced back with a field goal on their opening possession. FSU moved 52 yards on nine plays to the AU seven and freshman Chris Karolenko (Finksburg, Md./Calvert Hall)booted a 24-yard field goal as Frostburg State trailed 7-3.

Alfred's next two possessions resulted in touchdown runs and both drives covered 58 yards in a little over two minutes each. Lopez and Nick Clark both scored one yard touchdowns as Alfred led 21-3 after the first quarter.

Frostburg answered again when freshman Zach Zile (Woodbine, Md./Century) hauled in a 15-yard touchdown reception to cap an 11-play 71-yard drive early in the second quarter. Suddath ran for 32 yards on a third and two and completed five passes to help FSU to its first touchdown of the day.

Lopez scored his second touchdown of the first half, another one-yard scoring run, and the Saxons again surged out to a 18-point lead (28-10).

The two schools then traded touchdowns late in the second quarter. Junior Frederick Ramsey (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar) caught a 17-yard scoring pass from Suddath to cap FSU's longest drive of the afternoon, 11 plays and 72 yards.

Secky fired his second and final score of the ballgame with 53 seconds left in the half to push Alfred's lead to 35-17 at the break. He found Ryan Thon with a 19-yard scoring toss and the two connected for a total of 35 yards on the drive.

Lopez added to the Saxon lead late in the third quarter (3:38) with his third one-yard scoring plunge and Austin Dwyer scored on a three-yard run early in the fourth (13:53) as Alfred led 49-17.

Midway through the fourth, King scored the game's final touchdown on a three-yard run. He ran for 30 yards on the drive before finding the end zone for his fourth rushing score of the season.

Junior Marcus Wilson (Woodstock, Md./Randallstown) led with a game-high eight tackles and junior Terryl Monroe (Temple Hills, Md./Dematha) made six stops with one interception.

Frostburg State has next Saturday off and then returns to the field on Saturday, Oct. 16 when it travels to Washington & Jefferson at 2:00 pm.
