Football Suffers 21-6 Defeat to Washington & Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. - Tim McNerney ran for 173 yards and two touchdowns and Gino Rometo added 224 yards and one score through the air as Washington & Jefferson handed Frostburg State its third-straight loss with a 21-6 setback, Saturday afternoon.

Despite just three touchdowns, one in each of the first three quarters, the Presidents (4-2) dominated the game statistically. W&J led in total yards (448-96), first downs (26-7) and time of possession (38:02-21:58). Washington & Jefferson had a balanced offensive attack with 224 yards both through the air and on the ground.

McNemey carried the ball 40 times and scored the first touchdown for W&J after it fell behind 6-0 to FSU (1-5). Rometo completed 21-of-31 pass attempts, including a second quarter score that put the hosts up 14-6.

Frostburg State scored the game's first touchdown at 9:03 in the first quarter. W&J drove deep into FSU territory and down to the five before Rometo was intercepted by sophomore Brendon Blanchette (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) and returned to the W&J 18. Senior Anthony King (Germantown, Md./Northwest) carried the ball five-straight times before finding the end zone from two yards out as FSU surged ahead 6-0.

Washington & Jefferson scored on its ensuing drive for a 7-6 lead. Craig Sedunov returned the kickoff 30 yards to midfield and McNerney totaled 30 yards on the ground on six carries, including a one yard score as W&J moved ahead 7-6.

W&J padded its lead on the first drive of the second quarter when Rometo tossed a 30-yard touchdown to Ben Hoffer that capped the longest drive of the game (4:59) by either team. Washington & Jefferson scored its third and final touchdown on its first drive of the second half. McNerney carried the ball six times on the drive and scored from six yards out as Washington & Jefferson led 21-6.

The Bobcat defense did its part to hold W&J to just 21 points, despite seven trips inside the red-zone. FSU intercepted Rometo on the first drive, the Presidents missed a field goal with 4:53 left in the second and the hosts were stopped on fourth and four at the FSU 11 late in the first half. The Bobcats also held W&J on fourth and three midway through the third on their final trip inside the red-zone.

King finished with 37 yards on the ground for the Bobcats and the game's opening touchdown. Senior quarterback Lyndon Harris (Forestville, Md./Largo) threw for 81 yard on 7-of-21 passing while sophomore wideout Anthony Young (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) caught five passes for 63 yards.

Sophomore Cory Bishop (New Market, Md./Linganore) led both both teams with 10.5 tackles, including two for loss. Junior Terryl Monroe (Temple Hills, Md./Dematha) made 10 tackles while Blanchette added 10 stops and the interception.

Frostburg State travels to Waynesburg next Saturday for a 1:30 pm kickoff.
