Women's Soccer Falls to Stevenson 2-1 For Second CAC Loss

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson University scored twice in the second half, including the game-winner in the 79th minute, to give Frostburg State a 2-1 loss in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday.

The loss drops Frostburg State to 11-3 overall and 4-2 in the league. The Bobcats now find themselves in a four-team group with two conference losses while the Mustangs move to 9-5 overall and lead the league with a 5-1 conference slate.

Neither team was able to grab the upper hand after the first 45 minutes of play, desipte FSU holding a significant edge in shots, 9-5. Stevenson keeper Brittany Ross stopped two shots in the opening half while Bobcat netminder Michelle Buckmaster (St. Leonard, Md./Calvert) made one save as the first period ended in a 0-0 draw.

Stevenson turned the tables in the second half and held the offensive edge in shots, 9-5. SU's Jamie Matlock accounted for the first goal of the match in the 52 minute. She dribbled down the right side and scored in the far corner for a 1-0 lead.

Twelve minutes later, Stevenson added to its lead when Heather Redding collected a blocked shot and scored on a low show towards the far post for a 2-0 advantage.

The Bobcats clawed their way back into contention when sophomore Amanda Wharton (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) scored her league leading 24th goal of the season at 79:43. Sophomore midfielder Dorie Gedridge (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) crossed the ball from the left corner that Wharton knocked home and FSU trailed by just one, 2-1.

Frostburg State had two more opportunities from inside the 18-yard box late in the contest. Senior Lauren Russell (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) sent a shot wide of the goal in the 83rd minute and senior Taylor Jenkins (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) hit one over the goal in the 88th minute, but Stevenson held off FSU for the win.

Frostburg, which has now lost its last two games to Stevenson, held a slim 14-13 edge in shots while SU led in corner kicks 5-3.

The Bobcats return to the field on Saturday when they host St. Mary's in another key CAC matchup at noon.
