FROSTBURG, Md. - Nine players recorded at least one kill for Frostburg State as it cruised past Pitt-Greensburg 3-0 in AMCC volleyball action, Tuesday evening.
The win, hands FSU (15-3, 2-0) it fifth-straight victory and 10th shutout of the season.
Frostburg State also remains undefeated against UPG all-time, holding a 21-0 series edge with 16 shutouts.
FSU opened a 10-5 lead in game one behind three kills and a service ace from senior
Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg). The teams traded points over the middle part of the match until Frostburg State scored the game’s final five points for a 25-15 victory. Junior
Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) helped the hosts break open a 17-12 advantage with three kills and a pair of service aces.
Frostburg State raced out to a 13-3 lead in the second game, backed by a kill and two blocks from senior
Caryn Wright (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech). FSU kept the pressure on scoring seven of the next 10 points in the game for a commanding 20-7 lead. The hosts closed out the game behind kills from senior
Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett), and sophomores
Margie Maresca (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) and
Amber Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) for a 25-13 win.
Frostburg State rallied from several deficits in the final game of the evening, before eventually winning 26-24. With FSU trailing 24-21, the hosts scored five-straight points, including two kills from Maresca for the win.
Sophomore
Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) posted 16 assists, three digs and one service while senior Wright recorded five kills, three blocks and two digs.
Junior
Brittany McVearry (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) had four service aces and six digs in the win for the Bobcats. Brooke Winterling filled up the boxscore with eight digs, six kills, two blocks and one service ace.
Amber Winterling recorded eight digs, five kills and one service ace while Stephens posted seven kills, three digs and two service aces.
Frostburg State hosts its second-straight opponent this Saturday, October 3 when it hosts Pitt-Bradford at 7:00 pm.
