Volleyball Battles to a 3-1 Win Over Geneva

Senior Chelsea Wassell
FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State volleyball team defeated Geneva 3-1 Wednesday evening in a hard fought match that lasted four games to give Frostburg a three-game winning streak.

The Golden Tornadoes (6-3) struck first in the opening game but the Bobcats (13-3) answered quickly. The score went back and fourth for the first four points for each team until FSU pulled ahead 6-4 and never looked back. The Bobcats maintained a steady lead over the Golden Tornadoes until a kill from senior Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett) put FSU ahead 12-9. They would go on to score five more straight points to put the game away for Frostburg State. Geneva would try to rally against Frostburg State with little success never putting together more than two points in a row during the game. FSU won the game 25-17.

Once again, Geneva struck first in game two, but the two teams fought point-by-point for the first few points of the game. At 2-2, FSU scored four straight points to break the game open for the Bobcats to make score the 6-2, a lead that would not be surrendered for the remainder of the game. Senior Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) had four kills in the game for the Bobcats to aid in the 25-18 win.

Game three opened with Geneva taking a 2-0 lead that the Bobcats could not come back from. The Bobcats tried to battle back late in the game by scoring four-straight points to bring the game within four, 14-18, but the Golden Tornadoe offense struck for a 25-17 win.

FSU struck first in game four and combated with GC point by point until the Golden Tornadoes had a 13-11 lead. The Bobcats would strike back with a six-point surge starting off a kill from sophomore Sabrina Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) to bring the score to 16-13. Frostburg State would come back with another four-point run to solidify its lead. The Bobcats would win the game 25-19.

Brooke Winterling would finish the match with 19 kills and eight digs. Junior Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) added 10 kills and 13 digs of their own. Junior Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) and Sabrina Winterling each contributed nine kills in the win. Thomas also added 12 digs in the winning effort. Sophomore Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) posted 49 assists and 10 digs for the Bobcats.
