FROSTBURG, Md. - Freshman
Amanda Wharton (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) scored just before halftime and the Frostburg State defense held off a late charge to lift the women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over NCAA Division II Shepherd, Tuesday evening.
Box Score
The Bobcats improve to 5-2 overall on the season and stay perfect (3-0) all-time against the Rams (2-4-2).
Frostburg State outshot the visitors 12-2 in the opening half and had plenty of opportunities to put the game away early on. SU keeper Lauren Vetock made six saves in the first period, including a diving save on a junior
Kierstin Stevenson (Frostburg, Md./Beall) blast from the top of the box.
With less than three minutes to go in the opening half, junior
Lauren Russell (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) laid a ball back to Wharton who placed it over the head of Vetock for a 1-0 halftime lead.
The second half saw more of the same from the Bobcats as they led 8-4 in shots and clamped down on the Ram attack. FSU attempted four shots and had three corner kicks over the first 20 minutes of the second, while Shepherd attempted its first shot of the half at 66:24.
However, SU refused to go away and made one last surge over the final four minutes of action with three shots and a corner kick, but FSU goalie
Michelle Buckmaster (St. Leonard, Md./Calvert) turned away two of those attempts to preserve the win.
Buckmaster needed just three saves for her fourth win and third shutout of the season. Vetock made nine saves in the loss.
FSU returns to the field on Sept. 24 when it travels to Westminster, Md. to take on McDaniel at 4:00 pm.
