Frostburg State Kicks Off 2009-10 Athletic Year With Sweep of Waynesburg

FROSTBURG, Md. - The 2009-10 Frostburg State University athletic year officially got underway Tuesday evening as the Bobcat volleyball team swept past Waynesburg 3-0, behind a 10 kills each from seniors Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett).

FSU (1-0) has won its last three season openers and Head Coach Peter Letourneau is 4-1 with four shutouts to open the year.

The Bobcats wasted little time in game one, racing out to a 17-3 lead with an eight point run that included two service aces from Winterling. FSU finished the game with four kills coming from Wassell, Winterling and sophomore Sabrina Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg). The game ended in a 25-9 victory for the Bobcats.

Waynesburg (0-1) struck first in the second game but FSU quickly answered back. As the two teams battled in the beginning, the Bobcats pulled ahead with four-straight points to bring the game to 7-5. Although the Yellow Jackets battled back, the Bobcats took a three-point lead to put them ahead 10-7. Waynesburg would not come within four points of FSU for the rest of the game. The Bobcats continued hitting hard in the game with three kills coming from Wassell, two kills each from Brooke Winterling and senior Jennifer Stiffler (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach), including a kill to end the game at 25-18.

To open the third game, Waynesburg once again struck first. Similar to the second game, the Bobcats and Yellow Jackets battled point-for-point until the Bobcats pulled out to a 9-6 lead after a five-point run which included a kill from junior Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett), Wassell, and sophomore Alex Coleman (Derwood, Md./Magruder), and a service ace from junior Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir). The Bobcats would hold on to at least a four-point lead for the rest of the game. Thomas ended the game with a service ace for a final score of 25-13.

Sophopmore Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock), added to the Bobcat offense with 29 assists while senior Lacie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) put up five. Junior Brittany McVearry (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) also helped the Bobcats to victory with a service ace and nine digs.

The Bobcats look to continue the early season success as they travel to the Haverford Tournament in Haverford, Pa on September 4 and 5 to take on Stevens Tech, Haverford, Susquehanna, and Widener.
