FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State University junior forward
Lauren Russell (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) has been selected to the 2009 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NCAA Division III Women All-Great Lakes Region third team. Russell, the fifth all-region selection in FSU women's soccer history, garners her second all-region honor after being selected to the second team in 2007.
Russell continues to collect post-season awards following a standout year for the Bobcats. She was named the ECAC Division III South Women's All-Star Offensive Player of the Year, Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and was a First Team All-AMCC honoree. On the academic side, she was named to the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Second Team.
Russell led the AMCC and the Bobcats in several categories and set FSU single-season records in goals (27), assists (16) and points (70). She finished the year ranked fifth in the country in points per game (3.18), ninth in assists per game (0.73) and 11th in goals per game (1.2). She scored in 16 of 22 games and netted a season-high four goals in FSU's 5-1 win over Medaille.
Frostburg State finished the season 18-4 overall and 9-1 in the AMCC. The Bobcats won the AMCC Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, both for the first time since 2005.
Two other AMCC women's soccer players joined Russell on the all-region teams. Penn State Altoona sophomore forward Emily Reimold was named to the second team while Penn State Behrend senior goalkeeper Kayla Frost was placed on the third team. Ohio Northern, Otterbein and Denison led all teams in the region with four selections each.
