FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior
Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) smashed 25 kills and the Frostburg State volleyball team defeated Penn State Behrend, 3-1, in the AMCC Championship match, Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats earned their third-straight championship, and tenth overall and will receive an automatic bid in the NCAA tournament.
Frostburg State (30-4) and Penn State Behrend (22-10) were no strangers to one another as the teams met in the title match for the seventh time in the league’s 13-year existence. Frostburg State now holds a 6-1 lead in the championship match over PSB with the win on Saturday.
After dropping the first game of the match, 25-18, the Bobcats came back out and took the final three games with scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-19.
PSB scored four-straight points to open the first game and gain a lead of 4-2 which it did not surrender to take the first game of the match 25-18.
FSU started the second game with two straight kills from senior
Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett) and Brooke Winterling. The Lions answered with three-straight points to bring the score to 3-2, in favor of PSB. The lead changed hands twice before a 4-4 deadlock that was broken by a kill from junior
Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) to give the lead to the Bobcats once and for all in the game. FSU went on a three-point scoring run to bring the score to 8-5, and would not look back. Frostburg State took the second game, 25-17, to even the match 1-1.
Game three was a heated battle for points as each team seemed to answer the other after scoring a point. The deadlock of scores continued until it was 10-10 and FSU went on three-point run from a kill off Wassell and sophomore
Sabrina Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and a Brooke Winterling block. The Bobcats would hold on to the lead for the rest of the game and win 25-21.
In the fourth and final game of the match, FSU took an early 5-3 lead that would not be overtaken by PSB. The Bobcats went on a four-point run to bring the score to 12-8, which would be the closest scoring margin for the rest of the game. Brooke Winterling posted nine of her kills in the 25-19 win.
Adding to her 25 kills, Brooke Winterling posted 14 digs and four blocks. Junior
Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) was second on the team with 17 kills, 12 digs and one block followed by Sabrina Winterling with 10 kills and four blocks. Wassell added seven kills, two digs, one block and the team's one service ace. Thomas posted two kills, nine digs and two assists while junior
Brittany McVearry (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) added 13 digs of her own and sophomore
Amber Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) had eight. Senior
Lacie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) handed the Bobcats five digs. Sophomore
Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) handed out 59 assists and posted 10 digs.
