FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior
Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) smashed 21 kills and the Frostburg State volleyball team cruised past Penn State Altoona, 3-0, in the AMCC Tournament semifinals, Friday evening. The Bobcats earned their third-straight trip to the championship game with the victory and will face Penn State Behrend, which defeated Pitt-Bradford in the second semifinal matchup, 3-1.
Frostburg State (29-4) and Penn State Behrend (22-9) are no strangers to one another as the teams will meet in the title match for the seventh time in the league’s 13-year existence. Frostburg State holds a 5-1 lead over PSB in the title match, including a 3-0 win over PSB in last season’s championship. The Bobcats will also be searching for their 10th overall league crown.
FSU posted it’s 21st shutout of the season in the win over Altoona (17-14). The Bobcats won by the scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-14.
Brooke Winterling’s kills seemed to come in sets of three against Altoona. In games one and two, she had three kills late in each contest to seal Bobcat wins, while in the third set, she smacked three kills early on to help the Bobcats to a 7-1 lead.
FSU broke a 6-6 deadlock early in the first game and slowly edged out to a 25-17 win. The Bobcats used a 5-1 run in the middle part of the game for a 16-10 lead. FSU closed out the game with an 8-3 run.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 6-1 lead in game two and never let off the gas on their way to a 25-12 win. FSU used 5-1, 5-0 and 7-2 runs for the win.
In the third set, Frostburg State jumped out to a 7-1 lead and later led 15-9 behind a 5-2 run. After extending its lead to seven, 20-13, FSU used a 5-1 run for a 25-14 win.
Senior
Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett) was second on the team with seven kills followed by junior
Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) and sophomore
Sabrina Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) each with six. Three players reached double-digits in digs, led by junior
Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and sophomore
Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) with 12 each. Thomas turned in 11. Carrington shared 42 assists and Sabrina Winterling led with three blocks.
Penn State Behrend defeated Pitt-Bradford 3-1
PSB won 25-14, 21-25, 25-23, 25-13
Penn State Behrend advances to the tournament championship for the second-straight year, fourth time in five years and eighth time in the program’s history. The Lions will battle for their third championship and first since 2005.
Behrend’s Lauren Dalton finished with 15 kills followed by Carissa Johnston with 13. Brooke Gallentine passed out 42 assists, Danielle Woods had 24 digs and Sheila Ogden recorded five blocks.
