Men's Basketball Suffers First Loss of Season

BRADFORD, Pa. – Junior Brian Anderson (Perry Hall, Md./Eastern Tech) scored 22 points but it wasn’t enough as the Frostburg State men’s basketball team was handed an 89-77 loss at the hands of Pitt-Bradford in its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opener, Tuesday evening.

The loss is the first of the season for the Bobcats who sit at 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the AMCC. Meanwhile, UPB is 2-3 overall and an even 1-1 in the league.

The difference came at the free throw line as the Panthers used a 34-of-45 effort (75.6 %) from the free throw line, including 26-of-33 (78.8 %) in the second half.

Frostburg State led 37-32 at halftime behind 50.0 percent (15-of-30) shooting from the field. The Bobcats led throughout the entire opening period including a pair of 12-point leads.

Pitt-Bradford captured its first lead of the contest at 14:23 in the second half when Dan Heisey hit a layup for a 49-47 edge. The Panthers kept the pressure on and used an 11-3 run that handed the hosts a 10-point lead (60-50) with 11:47 remaining.

After FSU narrowed the deficit to five points at 62-57 (9:52), the Panthers used 13 free throws inside the final five minutes to push the lead back to double-digits.

Junior Busha Koffa (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) scored 15 points and senior Nick Sefcik (Shady Grove, Md./Damascus) added 14 for the Bobcats. Both Anderson and Koffa led the team with six boards each.

Heisey led both teams with 29 points while Zach Moore scored 16 points, 10 at the foul line.

Frostburg State returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 2 when it travels to Mt. Aloysius at 8:00 pm.
