Field Hockey Defeats Wilson in Championship Game 1-0; Smith Earns All-Tournament MVP Honors

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Chelsea Smith (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) netted the game's only goal as the Frostburg State field hockey team defeated Wilson College, 1-0, in the championship game to capture the Wilson Independent Tournament title, Sunday.

Frostburg State (9-10) led Wilson (6-11) in both shots (5-8) and penalty corners (14-8) to post its third shutout of the season and second-straight win. The Bobcats downed Wells College in game one of the Wilson Independent Tournament, 5-1.

Neither team was able to net a goal in the first half despite a total of eight shots from both teams, leaving the score at 0-0 going into the break.

At 45:26, Smith scored an unassisted goal to put the Bobcats on the board, 1-0. The Frostburg State defense was able to hold WC to only one shot in the second half, which the Phoenix were unable to turn into a goal to give the end score.

Frostburg State goalkeeper Maggie Edwards (Lebanon, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) stopped 4 shots in her ninth win of the season while Wilson College goalie Nikol Grafnetterova posted seven saves in the loss.

Frostburg State's Smith earned the All-Tournament MVP honors for her efforts this weekend with three goals and one assist. Joining her on the 2009 Independent Field Hockey Tournament Team from FSU were juniors Brooke Tapman (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) and Breanne Russell (Clements, Md./Chopticon). Over the two days of the tournament, Tapman recorded two goals while Russell chipped in one assist.

Other All-Tournament members included Shelby Moszkowicz (Wells), Adrienne Tomao (Wells), Samantha Larkin (St. Vincent), Maryellen Baverso (St. Vincent), Katelyn Aleman (Wilson), Jami DeVanie (Wilson) and Melissa Ellerman (Wilson).

Frostburg State returns to action November 7 at Bobcat Stadium against Christopher Newport at Noon for its senior day.
