CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Chelsea Smith (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) posted two goals and one assist as the Frostburg State field hockey team downed Wells College, 5-1, on day one of the Wilson Independent Tournament, Saturday afternoon.
FSU (8-10) led WC (1-13) in both shots (15-6) and penalty corners (9-7).
The Bobcats jumped to an early 1-0 lead over the Express after Smith fed a pass to junior
Brooke Tapman (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) who netted the first goal of the game at the 8:25 mark.
Just over 11 minutes later, Tapman netted her second goal of the game and seventh of the season off an assist from sophomore
Brandi Mixell (Fort Littleton, Pa./Forbes Road).
At 33:40, Smith scored her first goal against the Express off a fed from junior
Breanne Russell (Clements, Md./Chopticon) to put the Bobcats up by three points going into the break, 3-0.
The score remained at 3-0 until the 58th minute of the game when WC's Adrienne Tomao netted a goal off an assist from Shelby Moszkowicz to put Wells on the board, 3-1.
Less than three minutes later, Smith was fed a pass from junior
Lindsey Frost (Columbia, Md./Hammond) which she knocked into the back of the net for her second goal of the game, 4-1.
At 61:11, Frost netted an unassisted goal and her seventh of the season to give the end score of 5-1.
Frostburg State goalkeeper
Maggie Edwards (Lebanon, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) recorded two saves in the win while Express goalie Martha Nowlan stopped four saves in the loss.
Frostburg State returns to action on Sunday, November 1st at 1:00 pm against Wilson in the championship game of the Wilson Independent Tournament.
