FROSTBURG, Md. - Senior
Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) smashed a match-high 20 kills and posted 19 digs as Frostburg State remained unbeaten in the AMCC with a 3-0 sweep of Pitt-Bradford, Saturday evening.
The Bobcats (16-3, 3-0), winners of six-straight matches, posted their 11th shutout of the season and third-straight to open conference play.
Head Coach Peter Letourneau now has 96 wins at the helm of the FSU volleyball program and needs just five victories to become the all-time winningest coach in the program's history.
In game one, the Bobcats opened an 8-1 lead behind three kills from senior
Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg). Pitt-Bradford recovered over the middle of the game and closed the gap to 16-9, however, sophomore
Sabrina Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) smashed four kills towards the end of the game to power the hosts to a 25-12 win.
Brooke and Sabrina Winterling each had two kills early in the second game to help Frostburg State to an 8-4 lead. With the Bobcats up 16-12 later on in the match, Pitt-Bradford used a three-point run to narrow the gap to 16-15.
However, just like in game one, FSU proved too strong in the end. The Bobcats scored eight of the final 12 points behind three kills from Brooke Winterling and two each from senior
Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett) and junior
Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) for a 25-19 victory.
Game three was much closer than the first two as the Panthers raced out to the largest lead of the game for either team, 5-1. With UPB later up 16-14, FSU ran off four-straight points to rally for an 18-16 lead. Brooke Winterling sealed the win for the Bobcats with three kills late in the game as FSU broke a 20-20 tie and earned a 25-22 win.
Sabrina Winterling finished with seven kills and two blocks, Stephens recorded seven kills and 10 digs and Wassell had six kills. Sophomore setter
Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) had 39 assists, a block and a service ace, junior
Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) had 10 digs and sophomore
Amber Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) had nine digs.
Frostburg State will travel to and play Penn State Altoona this Wednesday, October 7 at 7:00 pm.
