Women's Soccer Caps AMCC Regular Season with 5-0 Shutout of Franciscan

Junior Lauren Russell
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - Junior Lauren Russell (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) scored a goal and added two assists as the Frostburg State women's soccer team capped its AMCC regular season with a 5-0 shutout of Franciscan, Wednesday.

Box Score

The Bobcats (15-3, 9-1) ended the regular season on a four-game winning streak with their 13th shutout of the season. FSU has also won 11 of its last 12 games. Frostburg State kicks off 2009 AMCC Tournament play on Saturday, when it hosts Hilbert at 4:30 pm.

After her fine effort this evening, Russell now needs just one goal and one assist to tie the single-season school records in both categories. Last Saturday, she set the single-season school record for points in a season.

Frostburg State dominated Franciscan (6-10-1, 4-6) in the win, possessing the ball in the Barons half of the field for much of the contest. The Bobcats attempted 33 shots and limited Franciscan to just six.

Freshman Amanda Wharton (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) scored first in the ninth minute for a 1-0 FSU lead. The goal, a low shot off a feed from junior Shonna Ferree (Frostburg, Md./Beall), is her 21st of the year and puts her in a tie for third place in a single-season in school history.

The Bobcats failed to find the net until the 33:43 mark. Sophomore Erin Ford (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) scored in the upper right corner off the foot of Russell for a 2-0 edge at the break.

Frostburg State scored two goals in a three minute span early in the second half to put the game out of reach with a 4-0 lead. Just under four minutes into the period, Russell scored an unassisted goal in the low left corner. At 51:58, Russell assisted a senior Lauren Lentine (Princeton, N.J./WWP North) goal.

Senior Christine Fitzgerald (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) scored the fifth and final goal of the contest with a high centered shot off a feed from classmate Kaleigh Herring (Perry Hall, Md./North Harford).

Sophomore Michelle Buckmaster (St. Leonard, Md./Calvert) and freshman Jessica Flewellyn (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) split time in goal and held the Barons scoreless.
