Women's Basketball Falls to Moravian in Eighth Annual Starters Moravian Winter Classic Opening Round

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Despite four players in double figures, Frostburg State couldn’t overcome a 29-of-32 effort from the foul line from Moravian as it handed the Bobcats a 67-63 loss in the Eighth Annual Starters Moravian Winter Classic, Friday evening.

The Greyhounds (8-1) made just 18 baskets and committed 16 turnovers but rebounded from a second-half deficit thanks to a 90.6 shooting performance from the foul line.

Sophomore Mercedes White (Bowie, Md./Bowie) led the way for FSU with 15 points followed by junior Brittany James (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) with 14 and junior Caryn Wright (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) with 12. Freshman Makeda Peterson (Landover, Md./Fairmont Heights) came off the bench to add a career-high 11 points in the defeat.

The Bobcats (3-5) as a team were 28-of-68 (41.2%) from the field but made just 5-of-6 (83.3%) from the foul line.

Bisci led the hosts with a perfect 14-of-14 performance from the charity stripe. Kirsty Stearns was the only other Greyhound in double figures with 10 points while Jessica Foran also turned in a perfect record at the foul line after making 7-of-7 attempts (9 points).

Moravian led for most of the first half including three seven-point leads, the final coming with 4:24 to play, when Emily Smith put back a rebound to hand her squad a 26-19 edge.

FSU was able to cut the deficit to just two, 34-32, right before halftime when senior Jamie Morningstar (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) hit a layup for two of her four first-half points.

In the second, White gave Frostburg State a one-point edge (41-40) 4:30 into the period that was held until Moravian retook the lead for good (57-56) with 4:52 to play.

Frostburg State returns to action tomorrow when it plays Bridgewater State in the consolation game of the tournament at 1:00 pm.
