FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State pushed its winning streak to five matches to start the season after a 3-0 defeat of Hood College at Bobcat Arena, Wednesday night.
The 5-0 start is just the second of its kind in school history and first since 1999. The '99 squad not only won its first five matches but started 12-0 and finished the year 36-5, the most wins in the program's history.
In the win over Hood (0-3), FSU easily captured games one and two. The Bobcats jumped out to leads of 13-5 and 19-9 before capturing the first set 25-14. The hosts quickly put away the Blazers in the second frame, running out to a 13-2 lead. After a Hood timeout, FSU continued the pressure and extended its lead to 21-6. Junior
Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) closed out the match and handed the Bobcats a 25-9 victory by smashing the final four points (all kills).
The Blazers hung tough in the third game despite falling behind 13-6. With the count at 17-11, HC used a 10-5 run to cut the deficit to 23-21. However, the Bobcats scored three of the final four points including a pair of kills from junior
Lacie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md. / Williamsport/UNC Pembroke) to seal a 25-22 win.
Winterling led all players with 12 kills followed by sophomore
Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md. /Southern Garrett) with six. Stephens also led both teams with three service aces.
A trio of freshmen turned in solid efforts during their Bobcat Arena debut.
Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) passed out 21 assists,
Amber Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) led the way with eight digs while
Alex Coleman (Derwood, Md. / Magruder) had five blocks.
The Bobcats return to action on Friday at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic when they take on Elizabethtown at 5:00 pm.
