Bobcat Defense Prevails in Home Opener

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State women's soccer team picked up its first victory of the season in a 3-0 shutout of Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday night at Bobcat Stadium.

The Bobcat (1-1) defense controlled the ball for most of the evening as the Royals (0-3) were only able to get off four shots the entire match. Junior keeper Stephanie Gwinn made saves on the two attempts on goal.

FSU scored the first goal of the game as freshman Meische Cox (Laurel, Md./Meade) lofted a perfect throw into the zone where sophomore Shonna Ferree (Frostburg, Md./Beall) placed the ball in the back of the net for her first goal of the season (10:03). The Ferree goal would be the only action of the first half as Frostburg State outshot EMU 8-3 in the period.

In the second half, sophomore Lauren Russell (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) led the attack just six minutes in as she scored off her own rebound. Russell initially took a fast break shot, but Royals keeper Abi Diffenbach deflected the ball. She then followed the shot colliding with Diffenbach as she tried to corral the rebound causing the ball to dribble into the net for the score.

The final score of the match would come off the foot of junior Amanda Drake (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill) as she dribbled around an EMU defender to shoot a laser past Diffenbach into the upper-right corner to seal the 3-0 victory.

The Bobcats are back on the field at home Saturday September 6 at 12:00 pm.
