SALISBURY, Md. - The Frostburg State field hockey team took two games in the opening day of the Salisbury Invitational, Saturday. FSU defeated SUNY Brockport 2-0 in game one and took a 4-1 victory over Denison in the afternoon matchup.
The win stretches the Bobcat (5-1) winning streak to five with FSU outscoring its opponents 23-5 during the run.
In the first game, Frostburg State got on the board early as sophomore
Brooke Tapman (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) netted her fourth goal of the season just ten minutes into the game. The goal was off an assist by junior
Sammy Stalter (La Plata, Md./La Plata).
The Bobcat defense held tough throughout the game with sophomore keeper
Samantha Foland (Myersville, Md./Middletown) recording her second shutout of the season, while recording five saves. The Golden Eagles had more penalty corners (6-5) for the game, yet managed only five total shots.
The clinching goal would come for FSU at 58:55 when sophomore
Breanne Russell (Clements, Md./Chopticon) drove home the second and final goal of the afternoon off of a senior
Aly Erickson (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) assist.
In the second game of the afternoon, Denison (2-2) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on a Lauren Keny goal just nine minutes into the game.
The Bobcats responded by driving down the field where Russell netted her second goal on the day off a big shot from the center of the arc to tie the game at 1-1.
The teams would come out at half with the score 1-1, but FSU stepped up its defensive presence as they shut down the Denison attack and limit the Big Red to just one second-half shot.
Stalter added her fourth goal of the year at 43:51 to break the deadlock and shift the momentum for the Bobcats. Just nine minutes later classmate Sarah Sturgill put the third goal on the board as FSU took control of the contest.
The clinching goal came at 63:58 as Stalter added her second goal of the contest off an assist from Tapman who placed a perfect cross from the right side.
FSU is back in action tomorrow morning against No. 3 ranked Salisbury at 11:15 am for the final day of the Salisbury Invitational.
