Field Hockey Shuts Down Shenandoah for Third-Straight Win

WINCHESTER, Va. - Five different players scored two goals each as the Frostburg State field hockey team cleaned up Shenandoah to the tune of 11-0 for its third-straight win, Wednesday.

The Bobcats (3-1) had the game in hand when leading 2-0 they scored five goals over a 10-minute stretch late in the first half to lead 7-0 at the break. FSU tacked on four more goals in the second period to bring the goal count to 11.

Shenandoah, which had only nine field players for the entire game, had just one shot attempt. Jocelyn Whitt took the Hornets (0-5) attempt at 46:55.

Sophomore Breanne Russell (Clements, Md./Chopticon) put the Bobcats on the board 6:17 into the contest with the first of her two scores. Senior Aly Erickson (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), junior Sammy Stalter (La Plata, Md./La Plata), sophomore Brooke Tapman (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) and freshman Sami Topolski (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) all found the net twice for FSU.

Senior Michelle Frost (Jessup, Md./Hammond) scored once, the game's second goal at 8:05. Russell's second goal (21:33) started the five-goal run for the Bobcats and handed them a 3-0 lead. The fourth goal of the game came from Topolski (25:03), the fifth from Erickson (26:03), the sixth from Tapman (29:12) and the final score of the half was at 30:24 courtesy of Topolski.

Tapman and Topolski added assists in the opening stanza. Tapman fed Frost's score while Topolski found Tapman for the 6-0 lead.

Frostburg State took 18 shots in the first and led 10-1 in penalty corners.

In the second half, Erickson got things started with her second goal of the game at 37:31. Frost assisted Stalter at 46:55 as FSU held a 9-0 lead and Russell passed to Tapman for the game's 10th goal at 51:51. Stalter ended the scoring when she found the net at 67:44.

FSU sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Foland (Myersville, Md./Middletown) and senior Rachel Babchuk (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) each played a half and combined on the shutout. Their counterpart, SU keeper Danielle Lawson made 12 saves in the loss.

Frostburg State returns to action this weekend at the Salisbury Tournament when it takes on SUNY Brockport on Saturday at 10:00 am.
