Volleyball Defeats N.C. Wesleyan in EMU Tournament Finals

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Frostburg State's volleyball team swept N.C. Wesleyan in the Eastern Mennonite Tournament finals to capture the title, on Saturday.

In the tournament finals, FSU swept N.C. Wesleyan with scores of 25-14, 25-21 and 25-12.

Junior Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and sophomores Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservior) and Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md. /Southern Garrett) FSU in kills each smashing eight. Freshman Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) had 28 assists, six kills, three digs and one service ace. Thomas also had 13 digs, four blocks and two service aces and Winterling had 16 digs and three service aces. Stephens chipped in six digs and one service ace.

Sophomore Rachel Burke (Laurel, Md./Reservior) led the team with 16 digs and five service aces while freshman Margie Maresca (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) had three blocks and five kills. Freshman Alex Coleman (Derwood, Md. / Magruder) posted four kills and two blocks to help the Bobcats led with nine digs.

In the first match of the day, the Bobcats (4-0, 0-0) downed Guilford in straight sets 25-12, 25-19 and 25-17.

Winterling led the team with 15 kills to go along with four aces and four digs. Thomas filled up the boxscore with six kills, five digs, four aces and a block while junior Jennifer Stiffler (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) turned in four blocks and thre kills. Burke led with nine digs.

A pair of freshman contributed in the FSU victory over Guildford. Carrington had 30 assists, four digs and three kills while Maresca recorded four kills.

The Bobcats host Hood College on Wednesday September 3 at 7:00 pm at Bobcat Arena.
