Volleyball Kicks Off 2008 Athletic Season with Pair of Wins

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The 2008 Frostburg State fall athletic season is officially underway and the volleyball is off to a great start with two wins on the first day of the EMU Tournament, Friday. The Bobcats swept both Mary Baldwin and Mary Washington 3-0.

FSU had little trouble with either team, downing Mary Baldwin 25-13, 25-15 and 25-15 and later beating UMW 25-14, 25-17 and 25-16.

In the opener, junior Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) paced the Bobcat squad with 14 kills while sophomore Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) had eight. Winterling also led Frostburg State with five service aces and Stephens had nine digs.

Sophomore Rachel Burke (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) led with 15 digs and classmate Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservior) had seven.

Freshman Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) led the Bobcats in assists in her collegiate debut, handing out 22.

It was more of the same in the second match of the tournament for the Bobcats.

Winterling turned in a solid all-around effort with 10 kills, eight digs, five aces and a pair of blocks. Stephens wasn't far behind with 12 kills, five digs, three aces and a block. Burke led with 16 digs and Carrington had 20 assists.

The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow against Guliford at noon.
