ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – The Frostburg State baseball team used extra innings in an exciting sweep of St. Mary’s (Md.) on Saturday, April 26. The Bobcats took game one 3-0 and came from behind for a 8-7 victory in game two.
In the first contest, Bobcat (20-12) sophomore starter Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) battled with Seahawk (18-21-1) starter Ryan D’Antuono in a classic pitchers duel. Garrity would pitch 6.0 innings allowing only seven hits and surrendering no runs. D’Antuono pitched a gem for the other side as he struck out eight batters and allowed no runs on six hits in 7.0 innings.
Both teams would slug it out through regulation as the Seahawks managed eight hits and the Bobcats spaced seven hits, yet neither team was able to plate a run leading to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, FSU exploded for three runs off Seahawk reliever Caleb Simms. Garrity led off the inning with a single to right field. Back-to-back sacrifice bunts by seniors Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) and Andrew Lydon (Southampton, N.J./Lenape) brought classmate John Micklus (La Plata, Md./McDonough) to bat with two runners on. Daddura had reached base on a throwing error as he raced to first base.
Micklus delivered with a two-run single to put Frostburg State up 2-0. Sophomore Jeff Kroboth gave the Bobcats a safety run as his sacrifice fly drove in Micklus.
Junior Gary Wolfe (Funkstown, Md/South Hagerstown) made quick work of St. Mary’s in the bottom half of the innings retiring the Seahawks in order to earn his fourth win of the season.
Garrity and Kroboth led the FSU attack as they each recorded a 2-for-3 performance.
The second contest saw the other side of the spectrum as the teams combined for 24 hits as each team worked deep into their bullpens.
FSU got on the scoreboard first as Micklus scored in the third inning after leading off with a single. St. Mary’s responded with three runs on four hits in their half of the inning for a 3-1 lead.
The Bobcats came one step closer in the fifth as Micklus again scored this time on a double off the bat of senior Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford). Again the Seahawk bats responded as they distanced themselves knocking two FSU relievers around for four runs on four hits to take a 7-2 advantage.
Frostburg State would band together for a gut wrenching comeback in the seventh as they ran three Seahawk relievers off the mound.
Clark led the inning off with a big double down the left field line. After a walk to junior pinch hitter Pat Hendricks (New Milford, Conn./New Milford), Mitchell stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI double. Senior Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) followed with his first hit of the day, yet the biggest hit of the afternoon with a two-run single that was smashed to left field bringing the score to 7-5.
The final blow of the inning would be landed as Daddura stepped in to pinch hit and delivered a clutch single to center field scoring Peake and Lydon. Lydon had reached base on a fielder’s choice a batter earlier.
Micklus made his return to the mound for the Bobcats and looked as if he never missed a step in striking out two Seahawks to end regulation and send the game to extra innings for the second time on the afternoon.
In the eight, FSU finished off the comeback as Mitchell scored the winning run on a squeeze bunt by sophomore Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick).
Freshman Kevin Williford came on to face SMC in the bottom of the eighth and provided some excitement as a walk and hit batter led to runners on first and third base with two outs. Williford would prevail as he forced a ground ball that Mitchell corralled for the final out and a 8-7 win.
The wins this afternoon give Frostburg State their eighth consecutive 20-win season.
The games scheduled for this Tuesday, April 29 against Christopher Newport has been cancelled, but additional games will be announced later this week.
