FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State baseball team split a doubleheader with Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mount Aloysius. The Mounties took game one by a score of 8-6 and FSU bounced back for a 6-5 victory in game two.

The Bobcats (13-10, 8-3) struck first in game one as junior Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) led off with a triple in the first inning. Clark would score when senior Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) grounded out to shortstop. Peake would drive in two runs and score one himself in the game.

FSU extended its lead in the second inning as senior catcher Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) hit a solo homerun to make the score 2-0.

The Mounties (16-14, 8-5) took advantage of numerous Frostburg State mental errors in the third inning to score six runs. MTA catcher Eli Traup led off the inning with a single and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Traup was driven in by Bryan Nolan on a single to left center. Mount Aloysius scored its next four runs on FSU miscues as it recorded one hit, four passed balls and a catchers interference. The final run of the inning would be driven in as Josh McGinnis would record a double on a high fly ball that fell between two fielders for a 6-2 lead.

FSU responed in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs of its own. Sophomore Jeff Kroboth (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) scored the first run on a throwing error by the pitcher trying to double up Peake on a fielders choice. Sophomore designated hitter Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) batted in senior Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) and Peake on a triple to left center making the score 6-4 and knock Mountie starter Gary L'Abbe out of the game.

Both teams would tag relievers for a run in the fourth inning to keep the Mount Aloysius advantage at two runs. MTA would score an unearned run on Bobcat reliever Gary Wolfe (Funkstown, Md/South Hagerstown) and Frostburg State would add a run as senior John Micklus (La Plata, Md./McDonough) scored on a Kroboth bunt single.

The final run of the game was posted by Mount Aloysius in the top of the seventh as pinch hitter David Brown doubled in Dan Clark for the final advantage of 8-6.

Sophomore Freddy Foshay (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) would take the loss as he was charged with two earned runs and four unearned runs in 3.0 innings of work. Foshay also recorded four strikeouts against six hits. At the plate the Bobcats were led by Clark who finished the day 2-for-2 with a triple, a double and a run scored.

In game two, the Mounties scored their first run as Kyle Rose crossed the plate on a wild pitch by FSU freshman starter Zack Lucas (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck). Frostburg State would bounce back in the third as Micklus and Kroboth scored on RBI's by seniors Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Mitchell for a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth inning MTA took a 3-2 lead on a two-run homerun by catcher Josh McGinnis.

The Bobcat comeback began in the sixth as Garrity led off the inning with a double down the right field line and score as senior Andrew Lydon (Southampton, N.J./Lenape) followed with an RBI single. Lydon would advance around to third base on a throwing error and score on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick). The third run of the inning would come as Peake was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

In the top of the seventh Frostburg State closer Kevin Collier (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) would blow his first save of the season as MTA scored two runs as back-to-back leadoff walks led to RBI's by Ryan Brandon and Bryan Nolan to tie the game at five.

Garrity stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh and provided the spark the FSU offense needed leading off the inning with a triple down the right field line. Lydon followed with a hard hit ball that crept just inside the third base line to win the game.

Collier would get credit for his first career win as he allowed two runs on two walks in his 1.0 inning of action.

At the plate Garrity led all hitters with a 3-for-3 performance with a double and a triple. Micklus followed close behind hitting 2-for-3 in both contests.

Frostburg State returns to action on Thursday, April 17 as they host NAIA member West Virginia Tech for a nine-inning game at 2:00 pm.
