PAINESVILLE, Ohio - Lake Erie posted 27 runs in two games en route to a sweep of Frostburg State in AMCC softball action, Saturday at Jack Slattery Field. The Storm posted an 11-6 win in game one and needed just five innings for a 16-1 victory in the nightcap.
Katie Puda had an outstanding pair of games for LEC (9-7, 6-0) combining to go a perfect 7-for-7 with eight RBIs, six runs scored, two homeruns, a double and triple.
Frostburg State (6-10, 0-2), trailing 3-0, plated its first run in the top of the fourth thanks to a pair of seniors.
Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County) reached first to lead off the inning after being hit by a pitch. Three batters later,
Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack) scored Baldwin with a single down the left field line.
The Storm further distanced themselves in the bottom of the inning with five runs, two homeruns, for an 8-1 edge. Puda smacked a three-run homer and Mary Beth Hoagland hit a two-run bomb to account for all five runs.
The teams traded three runs in the fifth and FSU scored two in the sixth to end the scoring. Sophomore
Samantha Quirin (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) scored on a wild pitch while Lindsay Seal (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) and freshman
Brooke Tapman (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) each drove in a run in the fifth for FSU. In the sixth, Tapman singled home two for the final runs of the contest.
Erin McColloch went the distance allowing just five earned runs on nine for the victory. Sophomore
Katelyn Coffey (Middletown, Md./Middletown) suffered her second-straight loss after allowing all 11 runs on 14 hits in 6.0 innings.
In the second game, the Storm used a 10-run third to blow open a 4-0 lead before going on for a 16-1 win.
Besides Puda's four RBIs, Shaina Vanderpool, Katie Staats and Haley Shinkle each drove in a pair. Hoagland accented the third inning with her second homerun of the day, a two-run bomb.
FSU posted its only run in the fourth. Baldwin led off the inning with a double to left center and later scored when junior
Kaitlyn Wagner (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) singled to center.
Lauren Malicki needed just 5.0 innings for the victory, striking out two and allowing five hits. Freshman
Kelly Callan (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) took the loss after giving up 16 runs, 12 earned, in 3.2 innings.
Frostburg State returns to the diamond on April 1 for a doubleheader against Penn State Altoona at 3:00 pm.
