Women's Lacrosse Slips Past New England 9-7

FROSTBURG, Md. - Seniors Lindsay Lamont (Sykesville, Md./Century) and Carly Rihard (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) each scored a goal late in the second half to help Frostburg State break open a close game and earn a 9-7 victory over New England, Saturday.

FSU (3-2) led 6-3 early in the second half but the Pilgrims (0-1) scored three goals to knot the contest at 6-6. Lamont scored her second goal of the afternoon at 14:14 to push the Bobcats ahead, 7-6.

Lamont gave the hosts a two-goal edge with just two minutes left with her third score of the contest and Rihard added an insurance goal with 1:11 showing as FSU surged ahead 9-6. With just three seconds remaining, Brandi Vittum ended the scoring with her first goal of the game.

The two seniors led the way for the Bobcats. Rihard scored four goals and had an assist while Lamont scored three goals and passed out three assists. Junior Meredith Martin (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson) and sophomore Elisabeth Hildebrand (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) each scored a goal for the Bobcats, both in the first half, while sophomore Lindsey Chaffman (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) had an assist.

Junior keeper Erin Morrell (Easton, Md./Easton) had an outstanding performance in net for the Bobcats. She allowed all seven goals and stopped 16 shots including 11 in the first half, helping FSU to a 5-3 halftime lead.

Casey McFarland and Emily Tanguay each scored two goals for New England in the loss. Alexandra DiRico played the entire game in net allowing nine goals while stopping eight shots.

Frostburg State held a decisive advantage in draw controls (14-3), but trailed in shots 30-26. Both teams struggled with clears as each team recorded 13 but New England finished 13-for-20 while FSU was 13-for-21.

FSU is back in action on Tuesday night under the lights at Bobcat Stadium when its hosts Roger Williams at 7:00 pm.
