Women's Basketball Edged Out By Pitt-Greensburg

FROSTBURG, Md. – Despite two players recording double-doubles the Frostburg State women's basketball team was defeated by Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg, 78-77, in Bobcat Arena on Wednesday evening.

Junior Brittany James (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) led the team in scoring with 26 points followed by classmate Caryn Wright (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) netting 21 . Wright also pulled down 14 total rebounds and had two blocked shots while James recorded ten rebounds and five steals. Junior Shanell Williams (Baltimore, Md./Woodlawn) also posted double figures for Frostburg State having 13 points.

Early in the first half, FSU (2-3, 0-1) and Pitt-Greensburg (5-1, 1-0) traded leads four times with the last at the 14:02 mark at 10-10 after a layup from UPG's Nicole Reiser.

With 11:07 remaining in the half, FSU went on a five-point scoring run giving it a seven-point advantage, 21-14, over Pitt-Greensburg, aided by a three-pointer from junior Sidra Bing (Columbia, Md./Catholic of Baltimore). UPG rallied back and took a six-point lead over FSU, 27-21, after scoring 14 consecutive points in four minutes.

Frostburg State cut this UPG deficit to only two points, 31-29, with 2:20 left in play after Wright netted a layup after pulling down a rebound. UPG pulled away to a six-point lead over FSU after a made free throw from Kelsey Wilcox with a minute left in the half. Wright managed to score on a layup after a steal from Williams to leave UPG with only a four-point lead, 36-32, over Frostburg State going into the half.

FSU came out strong in the second half going on a nine-point scoring run. This run gave Frostburg State a three-point lead over UPG, with five points coming from Williams. Pitt-Greensburg took back the lead, 42-41, with 15:14 left in play after a layup from Reiser. Frostburg State scored eight-consecutive points in less than two minutes to give it a game-high lead of 11 points over UPG, 55-44.

Pitt-Greensburg rallied back again to within two points of FSU after it recorded eight-consecutive points, 59-57, with 8:08 remaining on the clock. At the 4:26 mark, Frostburg State posted a nine-point lead over UPG, 71-62, after James netted one from within the paint off an assist from Williams.

UPG fought back and tied the game for the sixth time at 76-76 with 1:33 remaining in play after Wilcox scored on a jumper off and assist from Reiser. With a minute left in play, Bing netted a free throw giving Frostburg State a one-point advantage over Pitt-Greensburg, 77-76. In the last 14 seconds of the game, UPG's Lindsay Littler posted a layup off a steal from Reiser to give the end score, 78-77.

Wilcox led UPG in scoring (25) and rebounds (17). Three other Pitt-Greensburg players recorded double digits as Reiser netted 13 point and both Amanda Sheaffer and Jessica Mueseler had 11.

The Bobcats are back on the court at home against AMCC opponent Penn State Behrend December 6, at 1:00 pm.
