Men's Basketball Stung by Waynesburg 81-79

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - Ryan Courneen scored a game-high 17 points and the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets used six second-half three-pointers to edge Frostburg State, 81-79, Saturday afternoon at Marisa Fieldhouse.

The loss hands the Bobcats a 3-5 overall record on the season and closes out their fall semester schedule. FSU returns to action prior to New Years when it travels to the Randolph-Macon Tournament on Decmeber 29.

Frostburg State held the largest lead of the second half (48-41) just under three minutes in, but surrendered two leads in the final six minutes to a pair of Yellow Jacket (4-4) three-pointers. Waynesburg was a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and 5-of-6 from the foul line inside the final 5:36 to help overcome a one-point Bobcat edge (74-73) at 2:49 and seal the win.

FSU led in rebounds (36-32), baskets (29-24) and steals (11-5) but Waynesburg earned the victory after leading in three-pointers (10-5) including a 6-1 edge in the second stanza. WU was also 23-of-33 from the chairty stripe (69.7%) including a 12-of-16 effort in the second half.

Sophomore Busha Koffa (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) led three FSU players in double figures with a career-high 14 points and a team-high six boards. Seniors Keith Hazel (Weirton, W.Va./Weir) and Juan Wansley (Odenton, Md./Arundel) each added 11 points for the Bobcats.

Courneen was 6-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-5 from long range to pace Waynesburg. Jason Clark scored 15 points, Zach Engel had 13 and Colby Grubich and Dan Happe chipped in 11 and 10, respectively.

In the first half, Erik Noone handed the hosts a 10-point advantage (16-6) just over five minutes into action with his only basket of the contest. FSU rebounded with a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to take its first lead of the afternoon, 20-18.

Sophomore Brian Anderson (Perry Hall, Md./Eastern Tech) hit a three-pointer at 4:19 as Frostburg State took its largest lead of the first half at seven points (35-28). However, Waynesburg closed out the first period with five-straight points to cut the Bobcat lead to 38-37 at the break.
