Women's Soccer Comes Up Short at Championship

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Frostburg State women's soccer team fell short of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship title as they finished regulation tied 1-1 but fell in penalty kicks (4-3) to No. 1 seed Penn State Altoona in a shootout.

Emily Reimold put the Lions (17-0-2) on the board in the first half when she placed the ball into the right side of the net off a Kristen Parisi assist.

Frostburg State (14-2-3) came out in the second half with a strong offensive attack to outshoot PSA 5-2 in the period. Sophomore Heather Fleishell (Middletown, Md./Middletown) was able to score on the fourth shot of the half (68:42) when she headed in a corner kick from Tricia Richardson (Gibson Island, Md./St. Mary's).

The two defenses would clinch tight for the next 41 minutes as the Bobcats registered the only shot through the end of regulation and two overtime periods. At the end of the first overtime FSU replaced starting keeper Stephanie Gwinn (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana), who had two saves, with freshman Michelle Buckmaster (St. Leonard, Md./Calvert).

The game would go to a shootout in order to determine who would win the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The two teams traded the first three shootout attempts as they went into the final two tied 3-3. The key moment came as senior Tori Walter (Frederick, Md./Frederick) knocked her attempt off of the post to give PSA a chance to go ahead.

The Lions capitalized on the opportunity as Natalie Sheehan drove her attempt into the net. PSA clinched the game as senior Jackie Donovan (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) was stopped on her attempt by Penn State Altoona keeper Lindsay Raspanti.

FSU will now await a bid for the ECAC Tournament to begin next week as PSA recieves the AMCC bid into the NCAA Tournament.
