Field Hockey Splits at Wilson Tournament

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State field hockey team won its first game at the Wilson Independent Tournament on Saturday in a 5-0 decision over St. Vincent. The Bobcats then fell in the championship game against Christopher Newport, 4-0.

In game one, sophomore Breanne Russell (Clements, Md./Chopticon) and freshman Sami Topolski (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) led the Bobcats as they each scored two goals in the contest. Russell's goals came at 29:20 and 60:48. Topolski netted her goals at 34:09 and 41:10.

Leading scorer junior Sammy Stalter (La Plata, Md./La Plata) got into the action as she netted her 16th goal of the year at the 38:04 mark off an assist from senior Michelle Frost (Jessup, Md./Hammond).

Sophomore Samantha Foland (Myersville, Md./Middletown) and senior Rachel Babchuk (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) split time in goal in the victory. Foland recorded three saves in 55 minutes and Babchuk made two saves in 15 minutes of action.

In the championship game, the Bobcat defense held tight until the Captains found the net on a Katelyn Yandle goal at the 24:31 mark.

CNU again was able to breakthrough the FSU defense just two minutes before the break as Anne Gehring scored at 32:50.

Christopher Newport put the game out of reach with back-to-back goals at 51:22 and 53:06 scored by Taylor Harrell and Hylie Black.

The Bobcats were outshot 16 to 5 in the game as Foland recorded seven saves for the contest.

Frostburg State finishes its regular season with a 15-6 record, the 15 wins ties the school record for most wins in a season set in 1986. The Bobcats also end the season with 56 goals, which also ties the school record.
