Russell Pushes Women's Soccer into ECAC Championship

FROSTBURG, Md. – Sophomore Lauren Russell (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) scored both goals in a 2-0 victory over Dickinson to advance the Frostburg State women's soccer team into the ECAC South Championship game. In the other semifinal game, No. 6 seed Swarthmore defeated No. 2 Westminster 3-0 to set a matchup with FSU.

FSU (16-2-3) will host the Garnet (10-4-5) at 1:00 pm on Sunday, November 16 for the ECAC South Tournament title.

Russell found the goal early as she put the Bobcats up 1-0 at 11:46 as she split the defense and hammered a shot into the top right of the goal from 25 yds out. She wasted no time in securing the victory as she scored her second goal of the afternoon just five minutes later.

On Russell's second goal both sophomore Shonna Ferree (Frostburg, Md./Beall) and junior Amanda Drake (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill ) registered the assist. Ferree played the ball on a cross in front of the goal and Drake redirected the cross to Russell who was all alone in front of the goal to beat the Red Devils (13-4-4) keeper.

The FSU defense kept Dickinson at bay as the Red Devils managed 10 shots, yet only four were near the goal. Freshman keeper Michelle Buckmaster (St. Leonard, Md./Calvert) managed four saves on the afternoon to keep DC off the board.

In the second semifinal game, Swarthmore used an early goal by Kelsey Cline (2:02) to set the tempo and provide the spark the Garnet needed to upset Westminster (15-3-3).

The Swarthmore offense was the story of the first half as they outshot Westminster 8-4 before the break. The second half saw the tides turn as the Titans were able to apply pressure to outshoot SC 7-3. The Garnet keepers Lauren Walker and Marie Mutryn were up to the task registering a combined five saves on the afternoon.

Even though Swarthmore was only able to get three shots in the second half, it found the net with two of them.

Megan Colombo scored the second goal of the game at 50:47 with assists from Kelsey Cline and Sarah Reece off a long throw in. Hannah Purkey capped off the scoring and cemented the game at 56:56 as she placed a Maddie Williams pass in the goal.

The wins today set up a rematch of last years ECAC semifinal matchup, where Swarthmore ended the Bobcats season with a 3-0 win.
