Volleyball Splits Home Tri-Match

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State volleyball team swept Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Hilbert College, 3-0, but was defeated by Stevenson University, 3-1, on Saturday.

Game scores against Hilbert College were 25-11, 25-16, 25-18.

In the first game against Hilbert, the Bobcats (20-3, 2-0) jumped to an early 9-1 lead over the Hawks (5-9, 2-3) after freshman Christine Barnes (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) delievered a service ace. With a kill from junior Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg), FSU extended its lead to ten points, 18-8. Frostburg State continued improving its lead, giving the end score of 25-11.

The second game started much of the same way with the Bobcats jumping to an early six-point lead, 9-3, aided by three service aces from sophomore Brittany McVearry (Severna, Park, Md./Severna Park). The Hawks shrunk FSU's lead to two points with a run of four, 10-8, which was the closest of the match. Frostburg State went on a five-point run to end the game at 25-16.

FSU continued its early lead streak in the third game over HC with a 12-6 lead after a kill by sophomore Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir). The Hawks would again come to within two points of the Bobcats, 18-16, but Frostburg State would go on a six-point run to give the team an eight-point lead.

Leading the Bobcats in kills was Winterling with 16, Thomas with nine and sophomore Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md. /Southern Garrett) with six. Stephens also chipped in five digs.

Freshman Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) handed out 33 assists while sophomore Rachel Burke (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) had 11 digs. Burke also had four aces while Barnes had three and McVearry had three. Junior Jennifer Stiffler (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) had a team-high three blocks.

Against Stevenson (20-2, 3-1), game scores were 22-25, 20-25, 25-19 and 23-25.

In the first game, SU and FSU switched leads until the Mustangs went on a five-point scoring run which ended with a block from Alex Mercer, 23-20. Each team would score two more points, ending the scoring at 25-22.

The second game was like the first with the teams switching leads until the Mustangs had five two-point runs, giving them a five-point advantage over the Bobcats, 22-17. Frostburg State would only score three more points until Stevenson reached the game-ending 25 points.

The Bobcats rallied in game three a to nine-point lead over the Mustangs twice throughout the game. SU shrunk the Frostburg State lead to four, 20-16, but it was not enough for the Mustangs. The Bobcats scored five more points to end the game with a service ace from Thomas and a kill from Stephens, 25-19.

In game four, FSU jumped to six-point lead over SU, 11-5, however a five-point run from the Mustangs would tie the game at 16-16. The game would be tied again at 21-21 as the Bobcats scored three-consecutive points. This would not be enough to aid Frostburg State in the win as Stevenson University and FSU would trade points until SU gave the final score of 25-23.

Against Stevenson, both Winterling and Stephens had 14 kills each, Thomas had 13 and Wassell had ten. Thomas also chipped in 12 digs and two service aces while Winterling had nine digs and Stephens had three service aces.

Burke had 18 digs and Carrington handed out 42 assists. Stiffler led in blocks with two while McVearry had two aces in the loss.

Stevenson also defeated Hilbert College, 3-0, with game scores 25-6, 25-19 and 25-13.

The Bobcats return to action in Bobcat Arena against AMCC opponent Mt. Aloysius on October 7 at 7:00 pm.
