FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five games with a 2-0 shutout over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Medaille, Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcat (7-1-2, 3-0) defense continued to show its strength as it has all season long to limit the Mavericks (5-7, 2-1) to only four total shots.
Medaille keeper Mattea Haessner kept her team alive throughout the contest as she faced an unrelenting FSU attack to register eight saves on the day. Frostburg State ended the evening with 19 total shots.
FSU was held at bay until the 74th minute when
Tricia Richardson (Gibson Island, Md. /St. Mary's) found a cutting
Christine Fitzgerald (Gaithersburg, Md. /Gaithersburg) who netted a sliding shot from five yards out for a 1-0 advantage. The goal gave Fitzgerald her second goal of the season and Richardson her first points as she was credited with the assist.
With the Bobcat offense wearing down the Mavericks, Richardson struck again for her second assist of the match. She found leading scorer
Lauren Russell (Waldorf, Md. /Westlake) streaking up the right-side as she beat Haessner one-on-one for the final score at 2-0.
FSU took seven corner kicks compared to none by Medaille.
Frostburg State is back on the field Tuesday, October 7 at home for an AMCC matchup against Pitt-Greensburg at 7:00 pm.
