FROSTBURG, Md. - Junior
Kaleigh Herring (Perry Hall, Md./North Harford) scored the game winner in the 77th minute to hand Frostburg State a 2-1 win over La Roche in the regular season-finale for both teams, Wednesday at a cold and windy Bobcat Stadium.
With the victory, the Bobcats finish the regular season 13-2-2 overall and 8-1 in the AMCC. The one conference loss marks the fifth-straight season that FSU has had one or fewer losses against the AMCC.
The win also hands the Bobcats the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming 2008 AMCC Tournament. Frostburg State will host the winner of the No. 3 Medaille/No. 6 Pitt-Greensburg contest next Wednesday, November 5 in the tournament semifinals.
The Bobcats, winners of three straight and ranked ninth in the latest NSCAA/adidas Great Lakes Region Top 10, took advantage of an early opportunity when sophomore
Lauren Russell (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) scored her team leading 10th goal just 38 seconds into action. Junior
Lauren Lentine (Princeton, N.J./WWP North) hit a touch pass through the box that Russell ran onto and placed into the bottom right corner of the goal.
The score didn't remain in favor of the hosts for very long as the Redhawks (12-5-2, 6-1-1) found the net eight minutes later when Candice Snyder connected on a header off a corner kick (Kelly Katchmark assist) that found the lower right corner for a 1-1 tie.
FSU attempted six more shots and LAR keeper Raelene Zajac made two saves as the game headed into intermission tied at 1-1.
The second half opened the way the first ended as Frostburg State attempted six more shots before finding the net at 76:27 when Herring took a pass through the box from Russell and placed a shot in the upper left corner for the 2-1 lead.
La Roche had two late chances to even the game but junior goalie
Stephanie Gwinn (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) made a save in the 86th minute and the Redhawks couldn't capitalize on a corner kick with a minute remaining as time expired.
Gwinn stopped three shots in the win while Zajac made six saves in the loss.
