Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) smashed 16 kills and freshman
Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) handed out 33 assists to guide Frostburg State to a 3-0 shutout victory over AMCC opponent Franciscan in the first-ever meeting between the two schools, Saturday.
FSU (25-5, 6-1) had little trouble getting past the Barons, 25-16, 25-8 and 25-16.
The Barons (3-14, 1-7) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first game, but it was short lived as Frostburg State went on a 13-3 run for a 13-6 lead. After a Franciscan timeout, FSU further extended its lead to 23-10. The Barons were able to collect a pair of three-point runs but FSU closed out the match 25-16.
The Bobcats came out in a hurry in game two and raced to a 13-1 lead before the Barons scored back-to-back points to narrow the lead to 13-3. FSU put the game away with a 7-1 run in the middle of the contest for a 20-4 edge. The teams exchanged points the rest of the way before Frostburg State captured a 25-8 victory.
Game three proved to be the closest as the Barons kept the Bobcats from putting together a big run. FSU trailed 4-3 early in the game but scored 10 of the next 14 points for a 13-8 advantage. Franciscan narrowed the gap to four (20-16) but Frostburg State scored the game's final five points for a 25-16 victory.
Winterling also tossed in six digs and a block and now needs just four kills for second all-time in school history. Junior
Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett) and sophomore
Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md. /Southern Garrett) tied for second on the team with five kills each. Stephens also had 12 digs and two aces.
Sophomore
Brittany McVearry (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) earned her first start of the season at libero and led the way with 13 digs.
The Bobcats return to action at Penn State Altoona on Wednesday, October 29 at 7:00 pm.
