Women's Soccer Ties No.5 Johns Hopkins 2-2

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Frostburg State women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with No. 5 Johns Hopkins battling them to a hard fought 2-2 tie, Wednesday night.

The win improves the Bobcats record to 6-1-2 on the season.

Frostburg State came out of the gates firing as sophomore Lauren Russell (Waldorf, Md. / Westlake) netted the first score of the game just six minutes into play for the early lead. The Bluejays (7-0-2) responded in the 36th minute as team scoring leader Erica Suter netted a header off a Molly Steele cross to knot the game at one going into the break.

JHU did not waste anytime in the second half as Sutter assisted a Colleen Quinlan goal at 62:41 for a 2-1 advantage. The Johns Hopkins defense did its part in the second half as FSU was unable to get off a shot until the 69:22 mark.

The Bobcats offensive attack kept pressure on the Bluejay defense until they finally broke down with eight minutes left in regulation, which led to a misplay as a Meische Cox (Laurel, Md. / Meade) shot forced a JHU own goal. Regulation would end with the score 2-2.

Johns Hopkins took over in the overtime periods outshooting the Bobcats 5-1, but the Frostburg State defense would hang tough to keep the Bluejays out of the net to end the game tied 2-2.

Bobcat junior keeper Stephanie Gwinn (Ijamsville, Md. / Urbana) registered six saves on the evening as JHU took twice as many shots as Frostburg State in the game (19-8).

"I am extremely proud of the determination that our girls showed tonight against a tough opponent" said coach Brian Parker. "Our senior leadership on defense tonight was the real difference for all 110 minutes of this game."

Frostburg State is back on the field Saturday, October 4 at home for an AMCC matchup against Medaille at 5:00 pm.
