Lake Erie Uses Big Second Half to Get Past Men's Basketball

PAINESVILLE, Ohio - Lake Erie used a 54-point second half and had five players score in double figures to down visiting Frostburg State, 88-66, in AMCC men's basketball action, Monday.

The Storm (10-5, 6-2) shot 18-of-31 (58.1%) from the field, 6-of-7 (85.7%) from three-point range and 12-of-14 (85.7%) from the charity stripe in the second half to pull away from a close 34-29 halftime lead.

The Bobcats (3-13, 2-7) were led in scoring by senior Brian Green (Baltimore, Md/Archbishop Curley) with 21 points. Green also made three of FSU's five three-pointers. Fellow senior Jade Belt (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Matt Moore led the Storm with 21 points, 15 in the second half, on a near perfect afternoon. He was 7-of-8 from the field, 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Derrick Thornton was second on the squad with 15 points and Rick Leasure chipped in 13.

The first half was closer as the lead changed hands four times and the contest was tied three times.

Frostburg State fell behind 2-0, but rebounded with a 10-2 run to take a six-point edge just over six minutes into the game. LEC battled back to take the lead for good, 17-15 at 10:38. Thornton handed the Storm a seven-point lead (34-27) with just over a minute left in the half but Bobcat junior Juan Wansley (Odenton, Md./Arundel) hit a jumper with 41 seconds showing to cut the LEC lead to 34-29 at the break.

Green hit a jumper and a three-pointer inside the first two minutes of the second half to cut the Lake Erie lead to just one, 38-37. Three minutes later, Green hit another big three-pointer to bring the FSU deficit to three (43-40), but the Storm went on a 25-8 run over the next seven minutes to take a 68-48 lead. At 3:53, Lake Erie opened its largest lead of the game, 86-59.

Frostburg State is back in action on Saturday, January 26 when it hosts Penn State Behrend at 3:00 pm.
