Volleyball Earns Split in Home Trimatch

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State volleyball squad earned a split in a home trimatch, Saturday at Bobcat Arena. FSU defeated Medaille, 3-0 but lost to Washington & Jefferson, 3-2.

W&J posted a 2-0 record on the day after defeating Medaille 3-0.

In game one of the first match, FSU (10-7) broke open a close 8-6 contest with nine-straight points for a 17-6 lead. With the score 21-12, the Bobcats scored nine out of the final 12 points for the win. Games two and three were more of the same for FSU. In the second contest, the Bobcats used eight-consecutive points to open a 15-4 lead before going on for a 30-25 win. In the third game, FSU held leads of 10-5 and 21-10 before taking the victory at 30-15.

Sophomore Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) led the attack with 14 kills followed by freshman Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) with 12. Senior Jenny Wheaton (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) passed out 27 assists and freshman Rachel Burke (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) led the way with 15 digs.

Offensively, the Mavericks were led by Juli Taylor with five kills and Nicole Schuth with 11 assists. Dana Metz had four blocks and Amy Frazita with three digs.

In the second match, W&J shutout Medaille 3-0 with all three game scores ending at 30-17. The Presidents also used early leads to win all three games. Washington and Jefferson held a 7-1 edge in game one, a 10-4 lead in game two and a 10-3 advantage in game three.

Summer Baumgard and Monika Linden led W&J with nine and eight kills, respectively. Emily Yanos dished out 25 assists and Nell Davis led in digs with 10. Metz led the Mavericks with four kills and four blocks while Schuth had eight assists and Frazita had 18 digs.

In the third and final match of the afternoon, W&J downed FSU in five games, 30-21, 30-24, 25-30, 27-30 and 15-9.

In game one, W&J opened an 8-2 advantage but FSU countered to narrow the gap to 11-8. Washington & Jefferson quickly erased any comeback taking leads of 16-10 and 25-18. In game two, FSU grabbed an early lead 7-3 but W&J took its first lead at 10-8 and never looked back going on for the win.

Game three was the closest contest of the afternoon as neither team was able to take more than a three point lead until FSU opened a four-point gap at 23-19. The Bobcats eventually built the lead to 29-24 before swapping points for the win.

Frostburg State looked to be in complete control of game four holding a lead of 20-14. However, W&J scored nine-straight points to take a 24-22 edge. The Bobcats rebounded to score 10 out of the final 14 points for the win. In the fifth and deciding game, W&J put together scoring runs of three, four and three to hold off a Bobcat comeback and earn the match victory. The Presidents used their final two runs to break open a 6-5 game.

Three bobcat players posted double-doubles in the loss. Stephens had 18 kills and 17 digs, freshman Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) had 12 kills and 20 digs and Wheaton had 39 assists and 10 digs. Burke led the team with 30 digs.

Mihalik had nine kills for W&J followed by Linden and Samantha Butler with eight each. Yaros again the club with 44 assists while David had 25 digs.

FSU returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Penn State Fayette at 7:00 pm.
